Mr. Shapiro, Associate Attorney, represents insurance carriers, self-insured employers and public entities in all aspects of workers’ compensation defense. He conducts research and discovery, including depositions, drafts all manner of documents and correspondence and analyzes complex medical records.

Before joining the Bar, Mr. Shapiro was a Hearing Representative for the firm, in the Emeryville office, handling lien defense, including all forms of discovery, hearings, negotiations, trials, petitions for reconsideration and resolution of lien issues. Mr. Shapiro has held a couple of junior positions with Michael Sullivan & Associates — he was a Legal Assistant in the Westlake Village office, then entered law school and was promoted to Law Clerk in Emeryville. In that capacity, he analyzed and summarized medical-legal records, walk-through documents and deposition transcripts, and became conversant with HIPAA regulations. He attended lien conferences and negotiated settlements.

Mr. Shapiro volunteered with Kirkland & Ellis in San Francisco with the firm’s Street Law Diversity Pipeline Program, teaching a copyright law at a local high school and conducting a mock trial with the students. He was a Summer Associate with Friedland Laifer & Robbins in New York, where he conducted research and drafted memoranda on environmental issues, and reviewed documents for compliance with environmental codes and regulations. He also facilitated a multimillion-dollar arbitration. As a Legal Intern in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of General Counsel in New York, Mr. Shapiro summarized strategy sessions on pending cases concerning Superfund sites, researched business ownership histories of potentially responsible parties and drafted memoranda on various environmental issues.

Mr. Shapiro received his Juris Doctor from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. He received his certificate in Paralegal Studies, with distinction, from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he participated in the Mock Trial National Tournament, was Philanthropy Committee Organizer for Phi Alpha Delta and served as Student Member for the environmental safety advocacy group CALPIRG.
