Mr. Newsum, Associate Attorney, represents self-insured employers, third-party administrators and corporations in all aspects of workers’ compensation.
Before his promotion, Mr. Newsum was a Hearing Representative for the firm, representing insurance carriers, self-insured employers and public entities in workers’ compensation lien defense including all forms of discovery, hearings, negotiations, trials, petitions for reconsideration and resolution of lien issues.
As a Paralegal at the Law Offices of Philip M. Cohen in San Diego, he helped devise strategy for clients of the workers’ compensation applicant firm. He conducted research and drafted documents, and communicated daily with defense attorneys, insurance adjusters and applicants, as well as professionals regarding medical reports.
Mr. Newsum was a Law Clerk at Mulligan, Banham & Findley, a medical malpractice firm in San Diego, where he drafted documents, including summaries for medical records and depositions. He assisted in developing strategy for medical expert testimony, conducted research, prepared trial exhibits and assisted attorneys in trial.
He served as Paralegal at Goldberg Law, a workers’ compensation applicant firm in Fresno, where he conducted client intake interviews, assisted with discovery, scheduled depositions and communicated regularly with insurance adjusters and defense attorneys. He also managed three assistants overseeing more than 200 files. As a Paralegal at Tobin Lucks in Fresno, Mr. Newsum conducted research, drafted correspondence and scheduled AME/QME appointments and applicant depositions.
Mr. Newsum received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, where he received Witkin Awards and the Jefferson Medal for academic excellence in several classes. He was also Lead Mentor at Phi Alpha Delta, the international law fraternity, and a Fellow in business law. He received his paralegal certificate from the University of California, Davis, and his undergraduate degree from California State University, Sacramento, cum laude, where he was the Law Liaison Chair for Phi Alpha Delta, as a pre-law student.
